Click, click, click… that’s the sound we hear when our dog walks around on the hardwood floors. It is also the signal to know it is time to trim his nails!

When dogs spend a lot of time outdoors, running and walking on rough surfaces such as asphalt and pavement their nails will get worn down. However, with more dogs spending time inside due to the cold winter weather we have, as well as running on grass or softer surfaces it is critical to keep their nails in good health. Overgrown nails can affect posture that could eventually impact joint health and cause arthritis. Long nails are also prone to breaking, splitting, jamming and of course wreaking havoc on hardwood floors, bare legs and furniture!

To impress the impact that long nails can have try curling your toes under your foot and stand on them, maybe even take a few steps. Do you notice the change in your muscles and joints? There is a similar impact for our dogs. They are unable to stand correctly causing their muscles to compensate and altering their posture and gait.

Regular nail trims can be overlooked as part of their preventative health, but hold a significant impact on their quality of life. Nail trims are always included in our exams and our skilled animal health technologists can help your dog maintain a low stress level when stopping at the clinic for regular nail trims as part of our Nail Trim for Donation program*.

Keeping toes healthy and happy can provide added quality of life for your best friend.

*The Nail Trim for Donation program provides nail trim services for a minimum donation of $10. Every month the Animal Care Centre of Strathmore donates the money raised to various animal rescues and organizations dedicated to animal welfare. In 2016 the clinic raised $7,450.00!
