Everyone deserves to feel good about themselves. Unfortunately,
life can sometimes get in the way of that. Maybe work has been a little crazy
and it’s got you stressed out; could be that you’re getting a bit older and
don’t look like you did five, ten, or even 15 years ago; perhaps being a mom to
three kids is really starting to take its toll on your sanity (we’re kidding
about that last one…but only kind of!). Whatever your situation, it’s important
to keep in mind that for you to live your best life and to be the person that
everyone is counting on you to be, you need to be sure that you’re taking care
of yourself and feeling good about who you are and where you’re at in life. If
you’re having trouble figuring out the best place to find this self-worth, we
have a suggestion that might come as a surprise to some: boudoir photography.
“I’m a big believer in that if you take care of number
one first, everything else will be taken care of appropriately,” Crystal
Mitchell, photographer and studio owner of LLL Provocateur told me during a
conversation she and I had. “Because if you do it backwards, and you forget
about yourself, you get dragged down, you get depressed, you forget about who
you are.” Mitchell goes on in detail about how often she has men, women, and
couples approach her because they seem to have lost a part of themselves to the
world somewhere along the way. Whether it’s that intimate spark between
partners, or that view of oneself as somebody who is attractive, sexy, and
worthwhile, the pressures and rigors of day-to-day living have a way of waging
war against that positive self-image that is so important to maintaining a
happy, fulfilled life.
“It’s an investment in yourself,” Mitchell asserted,
before going on in detail. “I think that it has a large amount to do with
society. There’s a mould that’s been built, where you have to go to work, you
have to be the mom, you have to be the cook, you have to do all this stuff, and
then at the end of the day, they always feel like ‘Well, there’s no time left
for me.’ That’s doing it backwards. That’s the hard part, is breaking people
out of this mould, convincing them that it’s okay to spend some time on
themselves.” As someone who finds himself constantly running from commitment to
project to meeting to family function, I can definitely appreciate the point
that she’s is driving at. Her solution? Do something for yourself. Invest in
your own wellbeing. For Mitchell, the solution is as simple as spending some
time feeling good about the way you look and building up your confidence in
yourself again – and what better way to accomplish this than by posing for some
boudoir photography?
“It’s fun,” Mitchell stated simply. “And that’s what
they need to take away from the experience – that it’s empowering, and it’s
fun, because they get to just let go, and it’s freeing. I love it, because I
get to watch all of them blossom. As they’re walking out the door, thinking
that they’re just the hottest thing in the world, that’s exactly what my
purpose is to do – changing one person at a time.” Taking a quick look at LLL
Provocateur’s online gallery, it’s clear that Mitchell certainly has a way of
going about instilling that sense of self-worth and confidence into every
session she shoots. Not only are the photos phenomenal – she learned her craft
studying at NYU – but there’s something else that comes through the images.
There are so many individuals of all shapes, sizes, and walks of life
represented on Mitchell’s website, but the one common thread between every shot
is that there’s an indescribable natural beauty to them – a beauty that isn’t
just in the lighting of the photo, or the physical appearance of the subjects,
but in the confidence and self-worth that every single one of Mitchell’s models
brings to the shoot. It’s a truly amazing thing to see: so many individuals, so
thoroughly empowered and committed to investing in themselves.
“Our biggest slogan is always ‘Sexy is shameless,’” Mitchell
ended off. “And that’s important for us. We don’t want anybody to ever feel
shameful about getting boudoir photos done. It’s not dirty, it’s a very elegant
experience. It’s pretty, and it can be sexy, and I think that’s so important.
Size never matters, and my clients are anywhere from 20 to 70 years old. You
don’t have to be a size 0 – it’s all about bringing back that confidence.”
