Between Aleesha, Kathryn & Denise we have birthed 7 children. And even 27 hours of labour is nothing in comparison to the amount of work we put into the 2nd Annual Get to Know Your
Neighbour Festival over the last 6 months. Ok, that might be a slight exaggeration. haha. But really, 6 months of work and its all over in one day...

The Newsy Neighbour’s 2nd Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour festival was an even bigger success than it was last year! We hoped people would come out – and we were blown away by the attendance. We project double the amount of people from last year, and the response from attendees and vendors has been overwhelmingly positive.

The streets were packed with people of all ages. From bouncy castles, face painters, a dunk tank, the infamous Box City, a DJ, BBQ’s galore, a shredding service, balloons, food trucks, self-defence
class, yoga in the street, a community mandala, a bake sale, business sales, artists, fitness demonstrations, giveaways, a men’s high heel race, karaoke, a garage sale, popcorn, giant bubbles,
mascots and vendors galore.

And don’t forget the beer gardens and the CONCERT. We were so honoured to have such amazing musical entertainment this year! Two Shine County, Wildflower, Blu-Stone Band, Samm Smith
and Jaydee Bixby. What incredible talent on that stage. We want to give another huge thank you to New Space Construction for sponsoring the concert so everyone could enjoy it free of charge.

And how about that Samm Smith? She is 15, Aleesha said she is one of the most beautiful souls she has ever met. Incredibly talented and just so full of passion. She had the audience in "awe"through
her entire performance. Samm Smith, was one of the 200 hopefuls and the ONLY Canadian invited to the final round of auditions for season 10 of NBC's hit series The Voice. Good Luck Samm!

Denise hit 10,000 steps on her fit-bit by 11am and all the running around we did was so worth it – everything went off amazing. The sun was shining, people came in droves, everyone was fed and
everyone had fun! The entire purpose of the festival is to showcase local Strathmore businesses, namely downtown businesses. We heard many people utter the words, “I didn’t even know this
business was here!” We love that we are helping our residents learn what amazing businesses are available right here in town!

How much money was raised?
The Newsy Neighbour raised $860 for School Fuel by selling spots to vendors at the Festival. We had people vote online over the last 2 months for the charity they wanted to see get the money. It was neck in neck between The Happy Cat Sanctuary and School Fuel for most of the voting but School Fuel ultimately won. Congratulations!

$700 was raised by BDS Properties and CIR Realty for Step One Housing by selling hot dogs, burgers and a beverage for $4. Step One Housing provides housing for those at risk of becoming
homeless. They help with damage deposits, rent and utilities. The BBQ was donated free of charge by ATCO gas – thank you!

$436 was raised for Stephen Greene with the dunk tank. Stephen is 23 years old and was born with spina bifida. Stephen is now in a power wheelchair, which limits how easily he gets around. He has
dreams of going to school and getting a part time job – having a wheelchair accessible vehicle will help his quality of life. The dunk tank raised money to go toward this van.

$447 was raised for the Strathmore Overnight Shelter and $585 was raised for the Harvest Healing Centre. The necklace that was raffled off by the Shelter and donated by the Strathmore Jewellery
Boutique was won by Val Turgeon – congratulations!

What happened with the Shopping Challenge?
In order to enter to win one of our 3 HUGE baskets, you had to spend $10 in 11/22 downtown Strathmore stores in the Shopping Challenge that has been printed in our magazine for the
past 5 issues.

We had 47 entries for the Shopping Challenge this year, which is WAY more than last year!! 47 people spent the money locally just to participate and support. We are SO happy about this and
extremely excited about the growth. We promise to continue to make this bigger and better each year.

Gift Basket 1 valued at over $2500 was won by The Beddies
Gift Basket 2 Valued at over $1200 was won by Telisa Tebbutt
Gift Basket 3, Valued at over $1000 was won by Kyla Anderson-Janes

Congratulations to the winners and a special thank you for taking the time to support your local businesses that take part in this fantastic challenge.

Who do we need to thank for helping us put on this incredible event?
There are so many people, and we really hope we don’t forget anyone. First of all, this event would not have happened without all the hard work and incredible support and sponsorship from the Town of Strathmore. Special thanks to Tracy Simpson and Kendra Armstrong. Seriously, we couldn’t have done any of this without you guys. THANK YOU!

Next, there would have been no porta-potties and hand ing stations without Huxted Waste & Recycle. Huxted, you are such an incredible asset to this community. Thank you, Thank you!

New Space Construction not only completely sponsored the concert, but spent hours picking up all the tables and chairs, setting them up and taking them down and returning them. THANK YOU!

BDS Properties, Legends, Strathmore Times, Brooks Creation, King Edward Pub, Cesare's Plumbing, McDonalds, Calgary & Area Re/Max Realtors, Atco Gas, The Real Estate Reps, 5 for Life, Nikstar Promotions & NV Hair & Body Studio THANK YOU for your hard work, cash sponsorship, donations and everything or anything else you did! All the volunteers that came and worked their butts off that day helping: Brett Presley, Brodie Presley, Todd Gosling, Kathryn Hartwell, Tifannie Hartwell, Ron Presley, Lisa Grimes, Amy Neufeld, James Stanley, Dave Brooks, Thompson Greg ,
Logan Cruption & David Reesor, a huge thank you!

To sum it all up, we are absolutely over the moon happy with the response we got to this festival! We are so honoured that so many people joined us in this event. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! We can't wait to do it again next year!!!
