Langdon, Alberta – July 12, 2014 – This coming Friday, July 18th the 69th annual Langdon Days weekend kicks off in the hamlet of Langdon (15 minutes east of Calgary). Put on by the Langdon Community Association (LCA) this is a fundraising event that raises money for the LCA’s community initiatives.
Last year’s event was instrumental in raising money for the playground that was built in Langdon Park this past spring. Landon Days is planned and run by hundreds of volunteers, “It’s great how the event spurs Langdonites to come together and volunteer to make the weekend a success” articulates Shauna Bearwaldt, LCA’s President.
Visitors are treated to a variety of activities that start at 6pm on Friday with the first games of the weekend-long Slow-Pitch Tournament and the opening of the Beer Gardens. Tickets are still available for $15 and include a live performance by “Quentin Reddy”.
A free pancake breakfast runs on Saturday from 8am until 10am followed by a parade. “The parade is a highlight for my kids” adds Shauna. There is “always something different to see”.
The streets shut down and the residents and visitors of Langdon show off their floats to the cheering crowds before heading into Langdon Park for the Children’s Festival organized this year by FoSTES. Wristbands are $10 per child. “We have brought back some old favourites like the wagon rides and bouncy house” mentions Keri Graham, Chair of FoSTES “but brand new additions are the carnival games like the Hydro Blast and Caterpillar Stricker, as well as our canteen selling yummy treats of cotton candy and popcorn”. Synergy has youth activities set up for the teens and of course there are lots of ball games to watch, with 24 teams competing for the grand prize. A horseshoe tournament kicks off at 12:30pm. Everyone can take a weekend off from cooking as food trucks have made their way out to Langdon and feature some delicious
items sure to please everyone’s palates. Evening entertainment in the beer garden costs $20 on Saturday night (limited tickets remaining) and features a live performance from “High Steppin’ Daddy”, one of the members is local Langdonite Glenn Baker. No evening is complete without Fireworks happening at dusk.
Sunday starts off at 10am with a church service in the park and a Car Show and Shine happening in the parking lot of Langdon School. This is a highlight for many attendees due to the wide variety of vehicles on display. New this year, there is also a skateboard tournament that will showcase the local talent. Come “see some skateboard wizardry, have some fun in the sun, and enjoy a relaxing day of great vibes” says LCA Youth Recreation & Sports Director Tyler Homonoko. “Age categories are under 13 and over 13 and an open class” announces Tyler.
Registration costs $3 per entry with the tournament happening in Langdon’s Legacy Skateboard Park. Registration opens at 12:30pm with the tournament starting at 1:30pm. “People should come to Langdon Days as it showcases our hamlet and brings the community together to celebrate” concludes LCA Vice President Chrissy Craig.
